Skull of Picasso

This is an oil pastel I did this afternoon to pass the time. I applied the color to the card stock and rubbed it in with folded paper towel. In a way I liked the color before I smeared it into the paper, but oil pastel has the look of crayon if the paper is rough or you don’t work it smooth. This is the third oil pastel I have done in the last week and it turned out interesting enough to frame. I am reading a book on abstract art, but don’t think it has influenced my technique much.

Sunrise Portal

This painting hangs in my bedroom and is one of my favorites. It is the result of drawing overlapping circles with a compass and coloring in the areas thus delineated with various paints. It was a bit surprising to see the three dimensional form emerge from the black and white checked areas. This work reminds me of a portal into another dimension.

Colored Pencil Drawing of Surreal Nature

This is a colored pencil drawing I did back in 2002. I wanted to show on one side a green earth while on the other side a desert. Between them runs a red river of forgetfulness. The lithe purple doe drinks from the flowing waters and forgets her life of hardship in the barren earth. This piece is framed in an 8 1/2 x 11 frame and can either hang on a wall, as it is now in my library, or can free stand on a table for display. I have not worked a lot in colored pencil but enjoy doing these drawings.

Black Walnut Horse

This is a photo of a sculpture I did back in 1986 or so of a horse rising out of the sea. I started with a stump piece of black walnut from a tree that grew out in front of the house here. The stump had a knot in it that looked like the hind end of a horse, so I began removing material with gouges and a hammer until I had a rough shape. To finish off the piece I used sanding and grinding bits in a Dremel tool. This is actually the first piece of sculpture I ever tried and was an outlet for some hard feelings I was experiencing at the time. I like the action in the pose of this horse, which came naturally from the way the grain ran in the raw wood. I am not considering selling this piece at this time, but the right offer could cause me to reconsider.

Maple Branches in Winter

This is a painting I did with a brush and India ink on paper back in 2002. It is just black lines on a white background, but I think it captures what it is to be a tree sleeping in the cold winds of winter. A careful reading of this work will show that it is not a single tree, but a pair. This painting hangs in my library and I often look at it and think it is one of my better pieces despite its simplicity and lack of color. Perhaps I like this painting because it is so peaceful and shows the stark contrast between what is living, yet dormant, and the bleak white skies of a cold, overcast day. Oil pastel painting of a field of flowers.

The above photo is of a painting I did this afternoon in oil pastels on 8 1/2 x 11 card stock. It is framed in a two dollar frame under glass, hence the slight reflection in the photo. This work took me a couple hours to execute. I am still learning about the materials, so there may be some flaws. The flowers in the field on the right of the painting are actually a dark purple, but they photographed blue. I took my time doing this piece and it looks good on the shelf in it’s dollar store document frame.

Sunrise Over the Fields

I got out a canvas board the other day and decided to do another acrylic. This painting began with a series of bands dividing the surface up into separate areas. When the umber paint was dry the next morning, I set to filling in each area with different colors. The central yellow rectangle rising up the gridwork ladder is like the sun, giving light and warmth to the sky. Of course, this is an abstract, so any interpretation is possible. This painting is 11″ x 14″ and will be framed.

Flowers of the Night

This is an 11 x 14 inch acrylic painting of flowers on a black background.  It is on canvas board and is framed.  I started by painting the board black, then when the paint dried, I painted the irises and other flowers over it.  I like the contrast between the dark background and the flowers, which seem to glow.  This is one of my favorite paintings.  I will consider any offers for this if you leave them in comments or at my email.

Sugar Magnolia

This is an 11 x 14 watercolor on paper of some magnolia flowers on a branch.  It is framed under glass, so there is a slight reflection in the photograph.  I was going for an oriental style in this piece, hence the simple form and composition.  This is one of the few watercolors I have done.  This painting is one of my favorites.  Feel free to leave any comments or drop me a line if you are interested in owning this work.

Broken Glass Mountains of the Inferno Planet

This is an acrylic painting of a scene in orange and white with a touch of red.  It is 16 x 20 inches and is on canvas board.  I used the palette knife to block in some mountains that took on the appearence of broken pieces of glass heated incandescently.  The orange clouds show this to be on another planet where the temperature is much higher than it is on earth.  This piece is close to an abstract, as the forms do not overtly suggest a landscape, but imply one.  If you are interested in purchasing this painting, drop me a line in comments or email with an offer.
